How to connect with your intuition

Have you ever had a “gut feeling” that turned out to be right? Or something tugging at you inside when you are making a decision, saying ‘don’t do it’, when all the rational and practical signs are it is the right thing to do? That quiet inner knowledge is your intuition, and whilst it is one of the single most important resources we have, we so often ignore it or push it aside in favour of a simpler or more logical decision. This will often lead us to over analyse, to fret, to try and find a way out of a situation or problem that we know, deep down, we should be in.

What Is Intuition?

You don’t need to believe in crystals or tarot cards to use your intuition. Intuition is something we all have. It comes from fostering a connection with the emotional part of your brain, your limbic system, which is about the size of your fist. When you have an experience, your emotional reaction to it is stored there, alongside your memories, emotional patterns and core beliefs.

Connecting with your intuition is simply connecting with that part of your brain, and listening to it, rather than the prefrontal cortex, which is where your cognitive, logical thoughts come from.

It is your very inner part of your self, that knows what feels aligned, what’s safe, and what’s right for you — even if your thinking mind hasn’t caught up yet or it disagrees.

How do you know the difference between a thought and intuition?

The brilliant Ange De Lumiere, in her Intuitive Business Podcast, said that you can tell the difference between a thought and intuiton quite easily. She described thoughts as coming like trains, one after the other, at a time that you are thinking about the issue in question. However, intuition will feel like a bubble, rising up in you, usually at a completely different moment. She suggests that you write down these moments of knowing intuition, so you can reflect on them at a later date and see what the decision was that you made, what the outcome was, and whether your intuition was right.

Why We Lose Touch With Intuition

There are many reasons we stop trusting ourselves:

  • Conditioning: Society teaches us from a young age to value scientific explanations, logical answers, and external approval from others in society.

  • Trauma or stress: Having a traumatic or emotional experience can create a trauma or stress response, which can impact our relationship with, and knowledge of, our own emotional system, and can create a fear based response, rather than trust.

  • Overthinking: It is easy to get stuck in analysis paralysis.

How you can reconnect with your intuition

Hypnotherapy works by allowing you to access the deeper layers of your conscious and subconscious mind, without your over thinking logical mind and self doubt getting in the way. It creates a still, safe, space, for you to reflect on what your intuition is telling you, with no external judgement or interference. When you are in hypnosis, your mind becomes calm and open, and you can sense what feels right or aligned. You can explore what it is like to live in a way that is more aligned with your feelings, and explore different outcomes.

Signs You’re Tuning Into Intuition

Remember. Intuition isn’t something you need to find. It is there. It always has been. It is just a muscle you need to exercise. As you reconnect with your intuition, you may notice:

  • A stronger sense of clarity or “just knowing”

  • Quicker decision-making, without overthinking

  • Increased confidence in your choices

  • A deep feeling of peace, even when the path ahead isn’t fully clear
