The Reflective Lawyer
The pace and relentless pressure of modern practice makes it hard to find space to pause, discuss and move through the more emotionally and practically challenging elements of our role. Much as we all know we are required by the SRA to reflect and think ‘about the challenges and quality of your practice’, in reality this often gets pushed to the bottom of the to do list.
Bringing my experience as a solicitor and therapist together, I offer monthly one hour online Reflective Practice sessions for legal teams. The sessions provide a protected space for staff at all levels to bring to the table an issue or professional situation that has been causing them stress or concern. I utilise a deep understanding of the pressures of a legal environment to facilitate an exploration of the emotional and practical matters that have arisen for professionals within the group. We work in a supportive way to reflect on the effect of the situation, and what different approaches and skills could be used to move the matter forward, or how a different approach could be used should the matter arise again.
Reflective Practice isn’t therapy, supervision or training. It is more than that. It is a psychologically informed safe space where real progress is made as a team, as practitioners, and within cases.
