Working with parts in hypnotherapy

“Parts work” is a bit of a buzz phrase in the therapy world.

You may have come across therapists talking about it and wondered what it actually means—or whether it’s something complicated or even a bit intimidating.

The truth is, it’s neither.

Parts work is one of the most natural and intuitive ways to understand how your mind operates. And when used within hypnotherapy, it can be incredibly powerful.

What is Parts Work?

At its core, parts work is based on the idea that we are not just one single, fixed personality.

Instead, we all have different parts of ourselves—each with its own role, voice, and intention.

A common model used in therapy is Internal Family Systems (IFS), developed by Richard Schwartz. This framework helps us understand how these parts interact and why we sometimes feel conflicted, stuck, or overwhelmed.

The “Self” vs Your “Parts”

In IFS, there is a concept called the Self.

The Self is the calm, grounded, core of who you are. When you are operating from this place, you tend to feel:

  • Calm

  • Clear

  • Compassionate

  • Curious

  • Creative

  • Confident

  • Connected

These are often referred to as the “7 C’s”.

When you’re in Self, you’re present. You’re not reacting—you’re responding.

But in day-to-day life, many of us aren’t operating from Self as often as we’d like.

Why?

Because other parts step in.

The Different Types of Parts

IFS broadly categorises parts into three groups:

1. Protector Parts (Managers)

These are the parts that try to keep your life under control.

They often show up as:

  • The inner critic

  • Perfectionism

  • Overworking

  • Over-planning

  • Avoidance (including being “too busy” or even chronically late)

On the surface, they can feel harsh or frustrating.

But their intention is always protection.

They are trying to stop something deeper from being triggered.

2. Firefighter Parts

These parts come in when something feels overwhelming.

Their role is to quickly put out the emotional fire—often through distraction or numbing.

This might look like:

  • Doom scrolling

  • Overeating

  • Drinking alcohol

  • Sleeping excessively

  • Avoiding responsibilities

Again, these behaviours aren’t random.

They are attempts to protect you from something that feels too much to face.

3. Exile Parts

These are the parts that hold the deeper emotional wounds.

Often rooted in earlier life experiences, they can carry:

  • Shame

  • Guilt

  • Fear

  • Hurt

  • Emotional pain from childhood

These are the parts your system is trying hardest to avoid.

And your protector parts work very hard to keep them hidden.

There Are No “Bad Parts”

One of the most important principles of parts work is this:

There are no bad parts.

Even the inner critic.
Even the part that self-sabotages.
Even the part that avoids.

Every part is trying to help you—just in ways that may no longer serve you.

When we begin to understand this, something shifts.

We move from:
👉 “Why am I like this?”
to
👉 “What is this part trying to protect me from?”

That’s where real change begins.

How Hypnotherapy Helps

This is where hypnotherapy becomes incredibly effective.

Within hypnosis, your mind becomes more open, focused, and receptive. You’re able to:

  • Access different parts more easily

  • Understand their roles without judgement

  • Create space between you and those parts

  • Facilitate communication between them

Rather than trying to “get rid” of behaviours, we work with the parts behind them.

We can:

  • Help protector parts feel safe enough to step back

  • Gently access and process exiled emotions

  • Build trust within your internal system

Over time, this allows your Self to step back into the lead.

Why This Matters (Especially for High-Performing Professionals)

If you’re someone who is used to holding everything together—whether in a legal career or another high-pressure role—you may have very strong protector parts.

These might look like:

  • High standards

  • Over-responsibility

  • Difficulty switching off

  • Burnout

From the outside, these traits can look like success.

But internally, they can feel exhausting.

Parts work allows us to understand why those patterns exist—and to change them without losing the strengths that come with them.

Coming Back to Your Self

The goal of parts work isn’t to eliminate parts.

It’s to create a healthier internal relationship between them.

When your parts feel heard, understood, and safe, they don’t need to work so hard.

And when that happens, you naturally return to your Self:

Calm.
Grounded.
Present.

Not because you’ve forced it—but because your system no longer needs to protect you in the same way.

Final Thoughts

Parts work isn’t something abstract or complicated.

It’s simply a way of understanding the different voices within you—and learning how to work with them, rather than against them.

Through hypnotherapy, this process becomes not only accessible, but deeply transformative.

If you’re experiencing burnout, overwhelm, or feel like different parts of you are pulling in different directions, parts-based hypnotherapy can help you make sense of it—and move forward with clarity. Get in touch.
